Colour Ants :D

ANTS turn all colours of the rainbow in these amazing photos, taken as they eat specially dyed sugar drops. Dr Mohamed Babu set up the shots after his wife Shameem noticed that ants turned white when they sipped spilled milk.The scientist mixed sugar drops with edible colours red, green, blue and yellow and placed them in his garden to attract the insects.

As the eager ants scoffed the sweet treats the colour of the sugar they had chosen could be seen in their transparent abdomens. Some varied their choice, creating different colour combinations inside them.Dad-of-three Dr Babu, 53, said in Mysore, southern India: "The ants gain the colours as they sip the liquid. The secret is a paraffin base, which prevents the drops collapsing."Curiously, they preferred light colours, yellow and green. Dark colours had no takers until there was no room left beside the lighter ones."

Longest Keropok Lekor

Terengganu's favourite keropok lekor has made its way into the Malaysia Book of Records.All 479m of the traditional snack was showcased at the Bank Rakyat Carnival held at the Dataran Shahbandar on Saturday.The keropok was made in three days using 1,200kg of flour and several types of fish.

Malaysia Book of Records representative Leona Paul said: “It broke the previous record of 200m displayed during the Pesta Terengganu in 2006. So this 479m of keropok lekor truly deserves its place in the record books.”

Over 20 people from the Industri Keropok Warisan Sdn Bhd led by managing director Mohd Zaman Muda and 20 students from Universiti Teknologi Mara students took part in preparing the keropok.

Mohd Zaman said it took them three days to mix the ingredients consisting of flour, selayang, tamban and lolong species of fish.“The process to shape the keropok took two hours. Another three hours were needed to boil it,” he said. Proceeds from the sale of the keropok will go to charity.

Square watermelons anyone?

For years consumers struggled to fit the large round fruit in their refrigerators. And then there was the problem of trying to cut the fruit when it kept rolling around.

But 20 years ago a forward-thinking farmer on Japan's south-western island of Shikoku solved the problem. The farmer, from Zentsuji in Kagawa prefecture, came up with the idea of making a cube-shaped watermelon which could easily be packed and stored.

To make it happen, farmers grew the melons in glass boxes and the fruit then naturally assumed the same shape. The square boxes are the exact dimensions of Japanese refrigerators, allowing full-grown watermelons to fit conveniently and precisely onto refrigerator shelves.

Today the cuboid watermelons are hand-picked and shipped all over Japan. But the fruit, on sale in a selection of department stores and upmarket supermarkets, appeals mainly to the wealthy and fashion-conscious of Tokyo and Osaka, Japan's two major cities, since the fruit comes with a caveat: Each square watermelon costs 10,000 yen, the equivalent of about $82. Regular watermelons in Japan cost from $15 to $25 each.
